One of the main functions of a reservoir is to store the fluid required by the hydraulic or brake system. This ensures that the system is always supplied with enough fluid during operation.
The reservoir can help stabilize the pressure in the system. When the system pressure is too high, excess fluid can flow into the reservoir; when the system pressure is too low, the fluid in the reservoir can be replenished to the system, thus maintaining the pressure balance of the system.
In a hydraulic system, the pump may generate pressure pulsations. The reservoir absorbs these pulsations, resulting in smoother system pressure, which improves system performance and life.
Reservoirs can also help dissipate heat. As the fluid sits in the reservoir, it can lower its temperature by exchanging heat with its surroundings, thus preventing the system from overheating.
Some reservoirs are equipped with an internal filter that filters out impurities from the fluid, keeping it clean and protecting other parts of the system from contamination.
